In August 2017, China launched a pilot project of the Northeast Tiger and Leopard National Park to restore forest ecology and restore the Northeast Tiger and Leopard population. Tao Congrong and his wife live in Dahuanggou Forest Farm of Changbai Mountain Forest Industry Group at the junction of Hunchun City and Wangqing County, Jilin Province. Tao Congrong, who has only seen tigers in paintings since childhood, finally saw the live Siberian tiger for the first time a year ago.

Although Tao Congrong’s wife Dou Yingxia has never met a tiger, she has also seen the footprints of the Northeast Tiger with her own eyes.

Not only can you see the Northeast Tiger, but also the Northeast Leopard often meet people in Dahuanggou.

Dahuanggou is already the hinterland of the Northeast Tiger and Leopard National Park, which extends more than 100 kilometers to the west from the Sino-Russian border area where the Northeast Tiger and Leopard frequently moved four years ago. Here, the northeast tigers and leopards meet people so frequently, does it mean that they have followed the west?

As an expert of National Forestry and Grassland Administration Northeast Tiger and Leopard Monitoring and Research Center, Feng Limin and his colleagues have installed nearly 30,000 infrared cameras in Northeast Tiger and Leopard National Park, covering an area of 12,000 square kilometers, capturing amazing images every minute.

According to the latest statistics of Northeast Tiger and Leopard National Park, the number of Northeast Tiger and Leopard in the park has greatly increased. From 2012 to 2014, the population of Northeast Tiger and Leopard in this area was only 27 and 42 respectively. The wild Siberian tiger and leopard are located at the top of the forest food chain, and each settled Siberian tiger needs 100— The territory of 400 square kilometers, that is to say, every extra Siberian tiger depends on the improvement of forest ecosystem quality within hundreds of square kilometers. Tao Congrong and his wife, who live in the forest farm, personally feel the changes around them.

The Northeast Tiger and Leopard National Park is adjacent to the Russian National Tiger and Leopard Park, and more and more Northeast Tiger and Leopard gradually spread from the border between China and Russia to the hinterland of the Northeast Tiger and Leopard National Park. In 2020, National Forestry and Grassland Administration evaluated and accepted the pilot project of Northeast Tiger and Leopard National Park, and the report showed that it had become a stable habitat and a spreading source of wild Northeast Tiger and Leopard in China.
